'Fake ID' and Android security
7/29/2014 1:39:14 PM
What's going on with the latest Android security scare?
Today security research firm BlueBox — the same company that uncovered the so-called Android "Master Key" vulnerability — has announced the discovery of a bug in the way Android handles the identity certificates used to sign applications. The vulnerability, which BlueBox has dubbed "Fake ID," allows malicious apps to associate themselves with certificates from legitimate apps, thus gaining access to stuff they shouldn't have access to.
Security vulnerabilities like this sound scary, and we've already seen one or two hyperbolic headlines today as this story has broken. Nevertheless, any bug that lets apps do things they're not supposed to is a serious problem. So let's sum up what's going on in a nutshell, what it means for Android security, and whether it's worth worrying about ...
Google Play Developer Publishing API to give devs better control over their Android apps
7/29/2014 1:39:01 PM
Developers now have access to a suite of new tools that help them track how well their app is performing and manage it after it is published, and it all starts with the Google Play Developer Publishing API. This new API, which was announced back at Google I/O, makes it easier for developers to upload APKs to different tracks — such as beta, staged rollout and production — as well as manage other parts of production to go hand-in-hand with those releases.

How to remove notification tray brightness and volume controls on the LG G3
7/29/2014 12:50:57 PM
Notification tray space is at a premium, reclaim some of it by getting rid of those control sliders for volume and screen brightness
Notification tray space is at a premium on the LG G3, especially when – on some models, at least – there are slider controls for brightness and volume pre-activated in there. With these on, even that giant 5.5-inch QHD display has only about half the total space left available for, well, notifications.
Fortunately, if you don't want them, you can make them go away. Unfortunately on some of the U.S. carrier variants things are a little different to the unlocked, international model. Let's take a look at what's what.
Poll: If the Moto 360 only has one day of battery life, will you still get it?
7/29/2014 11:26:50 AM
The first couple of Android Wear smartwatches — the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live — are only getting about a day of usage off a single charge. That's not completely unexpected given that they're (mostly) full-fledged Android devices, with full-color displays. But it's still something we've had to learn to live with.
Right or wrong, expectations continue to mount for the Moto 360. Some believe it'll have better batter life. Some don't care, given that it's supposed to have Qi charging built in. And nothing changes the fact that technical details — to say nothing of pricing and availability — remain a bit of a mystery.
And so we put it to you. If you're waiting on the Moto 360, would a mere day of battery life be a deal-breaker for you?
